Bible Study 1: 3 Column Bible Study

Bible Study 1: 3 Column Bible Study:
a novel form of the inductive method

This is a good place to begin Bible Study. It is simple and can be used for new people.

In July 2013 I saw this study material in the course of missions "Perspectives". This method is used by missionaries to plant churches. It presents the Bible as the authority for the life that has to be obeyed at all times.

This method is very easy to use. It does not require much explanation to use it.
It is a variant of the inductive method.
  1. Text Selection: The selection of passage must be a complete gramatica unit, ie a paragraph, or section of several paragraphs that address a single issue.
  2. Prayer: Ask God to help you understand the text and what He wants you to do.
  3. Fold a sheet into three columns.
  4. Write the exact text in the first column. (This task helps one observe what the text says.)
  5. Enter the text in your own words in the second column. (How do you understand what is being said?)
  6. Write what you have learned about God, His church, humanity, sin, the church, (etc.) and how you respond to his word in the third column.
  7. Share what you have learned with someone else.
  8. Ask your friends Bible study to help you fulfill what the text asks you to do.
  9. Ask God to help you in your response to His Word.

This method is inductive Bible study reduced to its essence. The inductive method consists of three steps: Observation of what the text says, Interpreting what the text means and Application or significance is how we respond to the text.

Definitions:
Context: Where is the text found in the argument of the book. It may also be the place in the life of a person. What events happened before in the text?  What changes came after the text?
Meaning: What did the text mean in the life of the original recipients?
Significance: Why this text is important for us today? How does it change our way of seeing the world? What must we do or change to be consistent or in harmony with the text?

I have read the Word
I have understood,
I have set specific, achievable goals to obey,
and shared these goals with an other(s) to person(s).
